You’re 4 months pregnant. Trying to enjoy every moment of this beautiful miracle happening inside your body. But hovering over a toilet for hours isn’t exactly your idea of motherhood bliss.
Morning sickness can certainly feel unbearable. And when you’re almost through the first trimester, it can feel like there is no end in sight.
Sigh. I’ve. Been. There. Mama!
In fact 99.9% of expectant mothers have most likely been there too!
You are not alone.
I experienced morning sickness with all of my pregnancies, and unfortunately it never got any easier with the next. In fact, being nauseous while caring for a toddler was extremely difficult, and when the third pregnancy came along I felt like I was fighting an uphill battle.
So it’s no wonder I’ve had to do tons of research when it came to finding natural ways to relieve nausea. I was ready to try anything with this most recent pregnancy. Everything from different herbs and foods to homeopathic remedies.
What I found was that unfortunately things that worked for some, didn’t always work for others. But going through the list below helped me find relief little by little.
And not everything below will provide instant relief to you, but rest assured that with time, at least one or two should help soothe your morning sickness!
25 ways to treat morning sickness
1. Ginger
Ginger is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of nausea relief. Whether it’s raw ginger, ginger ale or even ginger snap cookies, it comes in various forms.
I assumed if this sworn-by remedy didn’t work for me one time, I was out of luck. NOT TRUE. Each and every pregnancy is different and you may find relief in different remedies each time, so try to keep an open mind if it doesn’t work for you immediately.
2. Peppermint
Peppermint was a God-send during my most recent pregnancy! I was really surprised how sucking on a few peppermint candies helped me temporarily cope with severe morning sickness. Many moms swear by it.
3. Lemon
Lemon was another taste and scent that provided much nausea relief. Whether it was adding a lemon slice to my water or inhaling some natural oils, it worked!
4. Crackers
Starch can work wonders for nausea in general. That’s why many moms like to keep a stash of crackers by their night stand or in their pockets on-the-go.
5. Toast
Similar to crackers, the whole-grains and starch provided in toast can help fight nauseousness.
6. Herbal Teas
Natural ways to alleviate nausea are definitely a must during pregnancy. Stick with basic herbs mentioned like lemon, ginger or mint. If they don’t provide relief over time, you may find that a combination of them will work wonders.
7. Pretzels
Whether it’s that added salt or starch boost you needed, snacking on pretzels can help ease morning sickness.
8. Potato chips
Just like crackers and pretzels, nibbling on snacks like potato chips throughout the day can be great for quelling nausea.
9. Popsicles
When you can’t fathom ingesting much, ice pops may be just what you need to keep hydrated and alleviate feelings of nausea. So many moms even find creating homemade popsicles with frozen fruits provides extra energy.
10. Water
Dehydration can easily lead to feelings of nausea. Make sure you always have a glass of water with you wherever you go. (Lemons were always nearby my water glass too!)
11. Nuts
Oftentimes morning sickness can be triggered by an empty stomach. Eating protein-rich foods like nuts can give you the energy boost you need to feel better.
12. Bananas
Bananas have many nutritional benefits – and during pregnancy they can be amazing for helping to ease gastric symptoms included vomiting and nausea.
13. Apples
Just like bananas, apples are another fruit that have been used to stop stomach acidity and treat vomiting.
14. Jell-O
When you can’t keep solid foods down, Jell-O may be just what the doctor prescribed. It is light, filling and is better than an empty stomach!
15. Gum
Sometimes just the act of chewing a mint-flavored gum can be all you need.
16. Hard candies
So many moms swear by hard candy like jolly ranchers. Maybe it’s the little blood-sugar boost that helps alleviate nausea for so many. (For me it was peppermints!)
17. Essential oils
If you haven’t already tried essential oils, they have been known to work wonders for a variety of issues. Peppermint, lemon, mandarin and lime seem to work best for nausea symptoms. The great thing is that they are completely natural and you can choose how you’d like to apply them: ingesting, inhaling or rubbing onto skin. Remember to always dilute them!
18. Aromatherapy
Calming and relaxing scents can be very therapeutic. Just be sure that they are not overpowering which can make your nausea worse.
19. Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been used for centuries for various ailments. Everything from back pain relief to fertility and nausea. It may be something to consider if you are facing severe morning sickness.
20. Small, frequent meals
An empty stomach can lead to nausea symptoms instantly. That’s why doctors are always recommending pregnant women eat small but frequent meals. Snacking throughout the day helps to keep your body in balance.
21. Avoid spicy/greasy foods
Spicy foods can trigger even more nausea so try to avoid them as much as possible if you are experiencing morning sickness.
22. Cold meals
Many expectant parents find that cold meals are better than hotter ones when managing nausea.
23. Vitamins
Vitamin B or other doctor-recommended supplements may help reduce nausea when taken with food.
24. Relax
Stress can lead to many issues, including nausea. Taking a nap, treating yourself to a pedicure or prenatal massage can help put your worries at bay and alleviate nasty pregnancy symptoms.
25. Sleep
Oftentimes, sleep is the one remedy that will work for everyone. Being pregnant can take a toll on your body and getting plenty of rest ensures you have the energy and strength to manage morning sickness.
